2008 Heart of Marin Awards Winners
Heart of Marin Awards Honor Volunteers and Nonprofits
Marin volunteers, agency executives and nonprofits were honored by 750 people, January 8, 2009 at the Marin Center Exhibit Hall. All honorees; other than the Corporate Community Service winner, win $5,000 each for their nonprofits. Youth awards carry an award of $1,000 each and are presented to five exceptional Marin County youths.
The ceremony was sponsored by the Center for Volunteer and Nonprofit Leadership of Marin in partnership with Tamalpais Bank – the founder of the Awards in 1992. The event is an annual showcase of the work done by local nonprofits and their volunteers.
| Excellence in Board Leadership | Linda Tavaszi, PhD, Who serves on the Marin Community Clinics Board and provided the leadership to raise $9 million in one year. | |
| Volunteer of the Year - Tied | Jean Taylor for her work to establish The Next Key Center, a program that works in conjunction with Homeward Bound to extend housing and job training programs in Novato.
Vincent Chew a volunteer Youth Outreach Advisor, peer mentor and spokesperson with Ambassadors of Hope and Opportunity. |

| Achievement in Nonprofit Excellence | Bread and Roses for its tireless work in bringing hope and healing through live music to 24,000 isolated individuals in the SF Bay Area | |
| Excellence in Leadership | Chris Chater, Executive Director /Senior Access for revitalizing the agency, building community relationships and continuing to provide much needed services to the adult population of Marin. | |
| Corporate Community Services Award | Bank of Marin for their support thru both financial contributions and employee volunteerism. | |
| Youth Volunteers of the Year | Lauren Grieve, San Domenico Middle School/8th Grade Volunteered at Meridian Health Foundation where she developed a project and educational website called Healthy Way-Green Day in conjunction with the United Nations Environment Program. Geared towards children/youths, Lauren’s project illustrates the link between what we eat and how it affects our bodies and our environment.
Hannah Bichkoff, Terra Linda High School/Senior Awarded for her work in healthcare and education in Latin American countries as well as her involvement with local nonprofits like Marin Human Race, Meals of Marin, Special Olympics, Casa Allegra and Lifehouse. Caroline Mulroy, Redwood High School/Senior Recognized for her commitment to Mama Hope, a local agency that supports effective grassroots organizations in the developing world. Caroline raised funds for a water project that was launched in August 2008 that brought clean water to over 5,000 people in remote Kenya. Cindy Ku, San Rafael High School Awarded for starting College Bound Student’s Association an organization focusing on providing underrepresented students with information, advisce and mentorship for going to college. Her commitment has had a huge impact on the issues facing low-income and undocumented students, envisioning closing the educational equity gap in Marin. Javier Espinoza, San Rafael High School/Senior Honored for his volunteering at Next Generation Scholars, whose mission is to provide underserved tudenst with guidance and tools to attain success in higher education. In addition, he does innovative work with domestic violence victims through his In-the-Box program at Marin Abused Women’s Shelter. |
